Our Success

UNIF provides education for the poorest of Haiti – 61% come from extremely poor families (by UN poverty line), and the remaining 39% would be considered poor by the UN in middle-income countries such as Brazil. Average annual family income of our students is only $904 USD per year.
Only 8.6% students have abandoned UNIF completely for various reasons. This is incredible when you consider these are extremely poor students.
Our alumni have seen great results on the job market in Haiti. 87% of our alumni have paying employment, sought higher education, or are successfully self-employed. This includes:

• In organizations like the Banque Nationale de Crédit, Fonkoze, Save the Children, FLM, and Swiss Red Cross.
• Working in public sector with Minister of National Education, Minister of Agriculture, or as mayors (CASEC) or judges (Magistrates).
• Obtained master’s degrees in Haitian universities as well as in the USA (Virginia Tech), Belgium (Université Libre de Bruxelles), and Brazil (Universidad Estadual de Ponta Grossa).

• Our veterinarian students give veterinarian consultations to peasants for their livestock as part of their schoolwork.
• The Veterinary School operates a “mobile clinic” which travels into isolated, difficult to access rural areas to give consultations to peasants in those areas.
• In 2009, the MV school conducted a vaccination campaign in collaboration with the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture.
• While Haitian peasants are extremely dependent on livestock for their livelihoods, there is a lack of health and animal production regulations in Haiti. Large Haitian farms are dependent on foreign veterinarians or training for their production.
• Since 2021, UNIF is the only Haitian university participating in a series of seminars with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) on the African Swine Fever and how to best react to it.

• We have completed two socioeconomic surveys of households in Fondwa – a huge accomplishment in which very valuable data has been collected and could be used by other universities for research.
• We have developed strong international partnerships:
  • The Swiss Red Cross has funded student internships, senior theses, and hired our alumni.
  • We have a very strong partnership with Universidad Estadual de Ponta Grossa in Brazil, through which we exchange both professors and students. They have recently awarded a UNIF agronomy graduate a full scholarship to complete a masters’ degree at UEPG.
  • Virginia Tech has offered master’s degrees to our students and is now conducting a research project with us on governance of organizations in the developing world.
  • Publication of research article on rice consumption in Haiti in collaboration with University of Arkansas.
  • Development of partnerships with universities in Cuba. Our Cuban partners have been key to the success of the veterinary school so far and will be an important part of our plan going forward.
